Gregory I. Jackson was born in Elmore, Alabama, and moved to San Antonio, Texas at the age of 4. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. Known in the community as Brother Greg, he is one of the Local Student Representatives of The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and The Nation of Islam. Brother Greg has been consistently active in all aspects of the N.O.I and his community.
In 1990, Brother Greg and Henry Lee started a young men’s basketball league with 14 teams to help keep young men engaged. Before game time, participants had to bring their grade cards for review at the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center. By 1991, the league expanded to include 9 female teams. Both leagues ran for the next four years. Additionally, the center hosted Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas events for youth and seniors until COVID-19 in 2020.
In October 1994, Brother Greg spearheaded the effort to rename the West End Multi-Service Center to the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center. The name change was celebrated on May 15, 1995.
Brother Greg continued his community work, meeting every Saturday at the Davis-Scott YMCA with the Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) for the Million Man March on October 16, 1995, which saw over 500 Black men from San Antonio attend. Following this, he launched UNITY (Uniting Neighbors in Training Youth) on October 21, 1995, which birthed the Pro-Am Summer League, allowing NBA players to join teams. The league ran until 2012, during which children from the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center also attended Spurs games.
Brother Greg continues to serve as an Advisory Board Member at the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center. In March 2007, he helped save the West End Senior Center from closure, securing $1.8 million for its rebuilding after initially being told there were no funds.
From 2008 to 2018, Parks & Recreation was removed from the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center. Brother Greg worked with city officials to restore the department, eventually securing $7 million in bond funding in 2017 to renovate the center.
Brother Greg also worked in Iraq and Afghanistan for eight years and credits prayer for keeping him and his family safe.
